Adjusts pay for Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff to match comparable federal positions.
The problem
NRC employees may earn less than similar federal workers in other agencies, making it hard to hire and keep skilled nuclear safety experts.
The proposal
The bill authorizes the NRC to adjust employee salaries to match pay levels at comparable federal agencies and positions.
The impact
NRC employees could receive raises. Taxpayers may pay more for NRC operations. Nuclear safety oversight could improve with better-retained staff.
Higher pay helps the NRC attract and keep experienced nuclear safety experts. Better staff means stronger oversight of nuclear power plants. This improves public safety.
NRC workers do similar work to employees at other federal agencies but often earn less. This bill makes pay more equal across government.
Experienced inspectors and engineers with nuclear expertise cost money to develop. Better pay reduces turnover and keeps skilled workers on the job protecting public safety.
High staff turnover forces agencies to constantly train new workers. Better pay means less turnover and lower training expenses over time.
Raising NRC employee pay increases the federal budget. Taxpayers may see higher costs or funds diverted from other programs.
The bill may not cap how much pay can increase. Costs could grow larger than expected without firm spending controls.
It is unclear which agencies the NRC should compare pay to or how 'comparable' positions are defined. This vagueness could cause disputes.
If NRC pay rises too much, it could pull skilled workers away from other important federal agencies. This may weaken other government operations.

Money from people who work there, not from the company. Not tied to this bill.
Itemized individual contributions via FEC, grouped by the employer each contributor self-reported. Companies and unions cannot contribute to federal candidates from their treasuries, so these totals are money from people who work at an employer — never from the organization itself. They are campaign contributions covering a full election cycle and are not connected to this bill.
