Bill aims to limit school counselors from keeping student conversations secret from parents.
The problem
Concerns that school counselors may provide confidential guidance to students without parental knowledge or involvement in certain situations.
The proposal
Requires school counselors to inform parents about student counseling sessions and conversations, limiting confidentiality exceptions.
The impact
Students, parents, and school counselors face changes in how private conversations are handled in schools.
Parents would know what counseling their children receive and stay informed about their child's wellbeing. This allows parents to provide support and follow up on issues at home.
Requiring disclosure could encourage open dialogue between students and parents. Families might work together to address problems affecting the student.
Parents could monitor counselor actions and ensure appropriate guidance. Transparency creates oversight of school counseling practices.
Students in unsafe homes might avoid counseling if they fear parents will be told. Abuse victims or those in dangerous situations may not seek needed help.
Students might not share honestly if they know parents will be informed. Counselors need trust to help students, and mandatory disclosure reduces that trust.
Young people dealing with sensitive issues need confidential support. Removing privacy could discourage students from getting mental health help they need.
Counselors would spend more time managing parent communication instead of helping students. Administrative burden could reduce actual counseling time available.

Money from people who work there, not from the company. Not tied to this bill.
Itemized individual contributions via FEC, grouped by the employer each contributor self-reported. Companies and unions cannot contribute to federal candidates from their treasuries, so these totals are money from people who work at an employer — never from the organization itself. They are campaign contributions covering a full election cycle and are not connected to this bill.
