Establishes a Taiwan Representative Office to strengthen diplomatic relations with Taiwan.
The problem
The United States lacks a formal representative office in Taiwan due to diplomatic constraints under the One China policy, limiting official engagement and coordination.
The proposal
Creates an official Taiwan Representative Office to facilitate diplomatic, economic, and cultural exchanges between the United States and Taiwan.
The impact
Affects U.S.-Taiwan relations, U.S.-China relations, and American businesses and citizens working with Taiwan.
An official office would improve communication and coordination on trade, security, and cultural matters. This could deepen the U.S.-Taiwan partnership and show support for democratic Taiwan.
Formal representation could expand business opportunities and trade partnerships between U.S. and Taiwanese companies. This might boost jobs and investment in both countries.
An official office would replace informal arrangements with a clear, legitimate diplomatic presence. This provides transparency about U.S. commitment to Taiwan.
Taiwan is a democratic nation, and formal representation aligns U.S. foreign policy with support for democracy and self-governance in the region.
China opposes formal Taiwan representation and views it as violating the One China policy. This could increase tensions between the U.S. and China.
Creating an official office may damage U.S.-China relations and complicate negotiations on trade, climate, and other issues where cooperation is needed.
The bill may create confusion about the office's official standing and could trigger legal or diplomatic disputes over proper protocols and immunity.
Establishing and maintaining a formal representative office requires government funding and staffing that could be used for other diplomatic priorities.
